HOW TO HOST A SUCCESSFUL KINDERGARTEN ROUNDUP

There are so many ways to have a fun day with your incoming students and their families, but first and foremost, keep it simple.

1. Have soft music playing in the background.

This sets a peaceful atmosphere and you won’t have those awkward silences. Music instantly puts people at ease.

2. Have items set out on student tables for them to get right to work on.

This allows you to chat with parents and students feel more at ease having something to do.

Play-doh, puzzles, linking cubes and pattern blocks are all easy and simple.

If you want to stick with our roundup theme, I made these free printables you can place on tables with crayons and pencils.

All free printables are at the bottom of this blog post.

3. HAVE A PHOTO CENTER SET UP

Parents absolutely love being able to snap a photo of their child.

This is such a special milestone for them!

You can make a bulletin board, or simply write on your white board.

4. Parent information

The most common question I get is almost always, “How can I make sure my child is ready for kindergarten?”

Be ready for this! Instead of repeating yourself 25 times, have a folder ready to go for each family.

I make these folders for each family.

Inside the folder will be all our school forms to fill out along with this “I am ready for kindergarten” chart and parent letter.

This is such a wonderful visual for parents so they can see all the skills that would be beneficial for their child to have by the first day of kindergarten. They can take it home and practice the skills during the months leading up to school.

Children love to color the stars as they meet their goals and parents appreciate the easy to use visual.

How will children work on these skills?

I make a packet for each student to take home as well. This six week kindergarten readiness program is SO easy for parents to implement as it follows a structure and routine that is predictable.

The daily activities target handwriting with correct directionality, letter names, letter sounds, rhyming, syllables, comprehension/sequencing events, numbers, 1:1 correspondence/counting, shapes and more!

All you have to do it print and staple the packets ahead of time, and this will pay off so much when childen start the first day of kindergarten already having mastered these basic skills.

5. KINDERGARTEN PRE-SCREENER

While parents are looking through the folder you gave them and filling out the necessary forms, you can pull individual students and administer a quick pre-screener to see where they are at.

This pre-screener assessment will give you so much valuable data on each incoming student.

I slip the assessment mats into page protectors, and then as students go through them, I can quickly record their answers on their individual forms.

Although I prefer assessing students myself, it is extremely helpful if you have an assistant or two also administering these assessments so you can get through all of the children quickly.

6. Treats for students!

After the assessment, I give each student a treat to take home. There is just something about pop rocks that kiddos love, so I made these tags and I just hot glue a bag to each. These tags are free for you to print and use!

I want to be sure my kiddos are EXCITED to start school with me in the fall.

I want them to leave orientation looking forward to starting kindergarten.
