February Reading Unit for Pre-k and Kindergarten
I am so excited to share my February “I See” literacy packet. Using high interest, themed material keeps students engaged and excited to learn.
I have done all the planning and prep work for you with this pack!

Using multiple resources with the same sight words and vocabulary will quickly build their confidence and fluency. It is so fun to watch them succeed and have fun!
I include lesson outlines for your convenience, but you can use them as you see fit.
Materials in this pack can take you anywhere from 1-2 weeks to get through, depending on your class and how long you choose to take with each activity.

The goal of these monthly units are to:
learn 8 monthly themed vocabulary words
practice specific sight words
build fluency and comprehension
practice reading and CAP skills
…. and have fun!
LESSON 1
I introduce the eight vocabulary words we will be learning.
This month the words are teeth, heart, friend, dentist, President, groundhog, valentine and card.
We go over the words and I show students the picture cards so they become familiar with them.
Students can trace the words on their vocabulary worksheet.
We then read the sentences all together in the pocket chart.
The sight words we are focusing on this month are: I, see, your, my, did, yes, can, saw, your
We read the sentences a few times, touching each word as we read with our magic pointer stick. I do not let students say the word until the magic pointer touches it. The sentences are repetitive, but one or two words change.
This build confidence and fluency, but it keeps their attention as well!
We are practicing 1:1 correspondence, left to right progression and so much more.
We play so many games with these pocket chart cards over the next week or two, and it is so fun to watch their growth!
LESSON 2
In lesson two, we practice our vocabulary words with a fun game.
Hang the words around the room, and students can go searching for them and then they write the word in the correct spot on their paper.
Unlike yesterday’s activity, the words are not traceable.
Now the lines are blank so they can find and match the pictures, and with the words looking at the cards.
Students love this game!
Mix up the words line by line and practice putting them back in order so the sentence makes sense.
LESSON 3
Now we are ready to read our books! I have taught background knowledge, the vocabulary words, sight words and students are familiar with the sentences.
Today, I read the book to students in this adorable digital book.

These digital books are formatted for both PowerPoint and Google Slides.
For the first half of the book, I read to the students. The second half of the book, we go through each page, but there is no audio. Students read each page chorally as a class.
LESSON 4 & 5
Now, it is time to pass out the mini books to students.
They are ready to read, build their fluency and work on comprehension skills.
The mini books match the digital book perfectly, so students are excited to read their very own book!
Both color and black and white versions are included, and at the end of each book there is a comprehension question page, a vocabulary check page and a sight word practice page.
For lesson 4, we just read the mini book together, then they buddy read and finally they can read it on their own.
The next day, for lesson 5, we do the activity pages shown above that are at the end of the mini books.
LESSON 6
For lesson six, we now take what we learned in reading, and transfer it to writing.
Reading and writing go hand in hand, and this is the perfect next step in our lesson sequence.
You can display the digital book again on your front board, and write your books together, or for your advance students they can do it on their own.
To challenge your advanced students, ask them to write their own sentence using the vocabulary word/picture.
You can also use this lesson in a literacy center and students can use the pocket chart cards as scaffolding.
There are so many ways to use these activities, and my lesson outline is just a guide.
I often repeat the lessons for my lower students, so these material can actually last for up to two weeks of lessons.
They are perfect for prek, kindergarten and intervention/struggling first graders.
