JANUARY READING ACTIVITIES FOR FIRST GRADE

Every month, students love that they get to read and write their very own book!

Two versions are included: one where students read and one where students can write their own book!

Picture word banks help students write sentences to match the pictures.

It is so fun to see what students come up with, and then they can read their books to a partner.

Students are not afraid to write when you provide them with the scaffolding they need to feel successful.

These activities will give you a great snapshot of where your students are at with their phonics.

We work on CVC words and short vowels versus long vowels. To practice hearing sounds in CVCe words, students love to sort.

I also cover beginning and ending blends, digraphs and word families… students love mixing up the activities (especially the mystery games where they use clues to find the correct digraph/blend and circle the word they spell.)

We also practice our sight words with rainbow writing, cut/paste and coloring by sight words.

Let’s label!

Meet your students right at their level!

Students cut and paste the words to label the January pictures.

They can match the words already written in the boxes or label on their own by reading/sounding out the words. This is a great way to build vocabulary each month.

JANUARY WRITING

We are having so much fun this month reading, writing and practicing our critical thinking skills.

It is so neat to see their progress because we cover many of these same skills every month, and each time they improve and their confidence grows.

Students absolutely love this writing activity! This month we are also writing about MLK and Chinese Dragons.

LANGUAGE

We work on solidifying our understanding of nouns, verbs and adjectives this month.

Students sort and glue the words under the correct picture.

I also provide a version where they match the words.

Every month we practice these important skills … repeated practice is key!

I am super excited about working on making inferences.

I give them the sentence frame, and students make inferences about each picture and how the people are feeling.

We are also practicing sequencing and comparing/contrasting. Sentences frames, graphic organizers and pictures help make these tricky skills not feel so overwhelming.

All of the important first grade reading and language arts activities are no prep for you and ready to teach!

JANUARY FIRST GRADE MATH ACTIVITIES

Understanding place value is so important in first grade!

These base ten blocks visuals are so helpful for understanding two digit numbers as a group of tens and a group of ones.

We practice breaking numbers down into their place value with so many activities so they can see different formats.

This helps them understand numbers on a conceptual level.

Each month, we practice place value with various activities.

We also practice before/after and skip counting.

On these activities, I always put a number line right on their page so they can be independent.

I love to see their growth with these skills each month.

Most students understand more or less, but for those who do not, using pictures and base ten blocks are helpful.

There are so many strategies to help students understand addition and subtraction.

We love sorting, and this month we are practicing adding and subtraction with zeros/skip counting by tens.

Just like my other activities, using number lines on each page is so helpful!

I designed these activities so you can easily target addition with and without carrying/regrouping (at the beginning of the year, we do not focus on regrouping.)

We are also practicing subtraction! These printables make it so easy to practice our skills using these in whole group lessons, small groups and centers.

Missing addends can be a very tricky skill for first grade.

There are so many ways to teach this, but a lot of practice with this standard is a must!

These are great review for practicing shapes, graphing and measurement.

Kids love to go shopping with coins!

This is excellent practice for counting money.

We practice telling time on both analog and digital clocks every month…. here we go with penguin time!

Repeated, monthly practice helps with this tricky skill.

Counting coins is also tricky, but practicing each month helps build their confidence.

The standards can be so much fun with these activities.

Every month we work on ordering numbers on a number line, number words, and fractions.

We love activities using a hundreds chart. Students hunt and find each number and color it the correct color.

They can also use their hundreds chart to put mixed up numbers in order.

You’ll love how activities are formatted the same each month, so students get repeated practice with the same standards.

The activities increase in difficulty throughout the year to target the skills we are working on.

They won’t spend a lot of energy figuring out what the problem is asking, rather they can get right to work.

Plus, you won’t waste a lot of time explaining directions!
