Bossy R is unit 9 in our primary phonics curriculum, and we have completed Units 1-8 so far.

Let’s get started… Bossy R is ready to go!

There are 5 r-controlled vowels we learn about in this unit.

This video is perfect for introducing Bossy R.

After this video, I introduce these anchor charts.

Go over all the words and picture to familiarize students with the vocabulary and sounds each vowel makes when controlled by “bossy r”.

Now we are ready to use the pocket chart cards. We do this activity multiple times together so students know the pictures and learn how to look for the spelling patterns.

Tip: start with sorting just two vowels at a time until students grow more confident.

I prefer to study one vowel pattern at a time.

I pass out the AR coloring sheet, and we read the words and students color the r controlled vowel pattern.

Then, we stick to the same vowel pattern and complete the mini book that coordinates.

I repeat these steps until we have learned all five r controlled vowels. After learning AR, students will know exactly what to do on the other four coloring pages and mini books. This will save you so much time in giving directions and explaining expectations.

Now that students are familiar with the words and pictures, we move on to these worksheets.

I suggest to start with the fill in the bubble worksheets and then move on to the fill in the blank letters.

By now, students are really getting the hang of the different sounds r controlled vowels make, and they are ready to sort words.

These activities also provide a great check for understanding.

Sorting between two vowel sounds is not overwhelming for students.

We have had enough practice now, that students are ready to build their fluency with bossy r words.

There is an options to provide picture scaffolding so this makes it very easy to differentiate for students.

You can also start with the picture chart, and then move to just the words. Reread to build confidence and fluency with all the patterns.

These adorable Bossy R Stories are a wonderful way to continue to build fluency and work on comprehension.

Each vowel comes with two versions - use one or both with your students depending on their reading level.

They each have comprehension questions and a writing prompt to check for understanding.

These true or false activities are also a great way to practice fluency and comprehension skills.

Because reading and writing go hand in hand, having students write their own story using the words we are learning is an incredibly important step. Picture word banks allow students to be mostly independent with writing their story.

Students love to share with a partner when they are done to see how different students use the words in their story.

CENTERS & ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES

I LAMINATE these game boards and THESE COLOR CHIPS are great because you can still see the words through them.

LAMINATE the puzzles, cut them apart and you’re set to go!

Targeted, specific lessons with r controlled vowels, plus fluency, comprehension, writing and games will ensure that your students are completely fluent with BOSSY R WORDS. Phonics can, and should be fun!
