CAN I JOIN YOUR CLUB? Book Companion

This is one of my favorite books to teach about inclusion, making others feel welcome and basic friendship skills.

It is so catchy, and the kids will ask you to read the over and over again.

I made these adorable printable activities to coordinate with the book perfectly. Book companion activities help children deepen their understanding, expand their vocabulary and make connections to their own lives.

I have done the planning and prep work for you!

Overview: Duck wants to be friends with everyone. He asks Lion, “Can I join you club?” Lion asks him if he has certain qualities, such as does he have a mane? Can he roar like a lion? Since Duck does not meet the club requirements, Lion says, “DENIED!”

This same thing happens when Duck asks to joins Snake’s club and Elephant’s club. Kids love to join in and say the repetitive lines with you.

I stop while reading and ask, “How do you think Duck feels?” “Have you ever felt left out because you don’t have _______?”

Finally, Duck decides to start his own club where everyone is welcome.

After you read the story, we use the activities to expand our comprehension. I love tying reading and writing together.

We record what Lion, Elephant and Snake all say to Duck when he asks to join their club.

For younger children, you can write their answers in highlighter and they can trace it.

To also help with writing, I love using picture word banks so children feel more confident while writing.

Spread these activities throughout an entire week, and reread the book many times. Each time, children get more excited to join in on certain parts of the book.

We love talking about inclusion (and practicing it!) all week.

We love learning about how to be a good friend, conflict resolution skills, how to give compliments and our social skills!
